Beginning with informal worship in their homes in 1836, St. John was formally organized in 1843 by German immigrants. They purchased property at Clay and Market Streets in 1861. In October 1867 the present revival gothic cathedral was dedicated. The eleven stunning stained glass windows surround the worshipper with brilliant colors and inspiration. The Steiner organ contains elements of a Schantz organ installed in 1964 and a Pilcher organ installed in 1925. It has over 2300 pipes divided among its five divisions and 42 ranks.
St. John participates in the First Friday Trolley Hop, giving artists and musicians a free space to participate. The doors are opened and everyone is invited to come in to see the beautiful sanctuary.
We also host many non-member weddings in our sanctuary. You are welcome to have your ceremony with your Officiant and musicians, any day of the week.
The St. John NuLu Theatre (629 E. Market) is open to the public for concerts, plays, art exhibits, and other events. Enjoy a free concert during the First Friday Trolley Hop at 6pm.
St. John is an Open and Affirming Congregation.
Sunday Worship is at 10:30am. For wedding or Theatre inquiries, call (502) 587-1653.
